[Abstract]
 The article provides an overview of the theory of hyperbolic polynomials,
 founded in the middle of XX century by the Swedish mathematician Lars Garding.
 We describe the origin of this theory, the basic facts about the hyperbolic
 polynomials and Garding's cones, the typical examples and application area,
 in particular the role that they have played in the modern theory of fully
 nonlinear partial differential equations.
